NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS - The Grade Four to Seven learners at Lettie de Klerk School spent a wonderful day out in Middelburg last week, where they were hosted by Ellen Olivier Primary School. As a rural school without their own vehicles, outings are not a common occurrence, and both staff and children looked forward to the excursion for weeks before.
It was decided to combine an educational and a sporting outing. Taxis and a combi were filled with netball, rugby and soccer players.
On arrival, the Nieu-Bethesda children were greeted by the Principal Ellen Olvier, who took everyone on a tour of Grootfontein Agricultural School. Here the learners were taught about different wool types, how sheep are sheared and were shown the classrooms where the Grootfontein students learn about subjects such as construction and woodwork.
Both staff and learners enjoyed the tour immensely and learned a great deal. Some children dreamed of one day being able to attend such a tertiary place of learning.
And then the games began. The staff and coaches had gone to great lengths to ensure that everyone had proper kit and they proudly represented their respective schools.
Ellen Olivier won the soccer 2-0, while the rugby was a tightly contested match with Lettie de Klerk only going down by 2 points, losing 35-37. The u11 Lettie de Klerk girls won their netball match 13-0, the u12’s lost 4-7 and the u13’s won 11-9.
After the matches, Lettie de Klerk’s staff and learners were treated to a delicious meal which proved to be the perfect ending to a beautiful day.
