NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS — During the July holidays, some of the children of Nieu-Bethesda were treated to a series of holiday workshops coordinated by Paula Kingwill (drama therapist) and run by Jenny Nel (educator), Amari Annandale (drama therapy masters student), Dalene Kruger (author/volunteer) and Grace Nel (volunteer).
The little Post Office in the village served as the venue for a series of exciting activities for the children from the age of 5 to 15, including role play, story telling, art and games.
During this time, children found themselves in a safe space where they could express concerns and anxieties and were taught how to transform these feelings into the positive. During the long holidays, workshops like these add to the lives of the children in the village and offer them stimulation and guidance.
At a separate workshop on ‘The Rest’, Union High’s first team hockey girls engaged in a number of processes specifically designed by Kingwill to involve the learners in activities around verbal communication, making for positive play on the hockey field and in life!
According to team manager, Bronlyn Gamiet, “We saw the girls in a different light…and we left there refreshed, excited and ready for the games that follow. I trust that the girls will use what they have learned from this valuable experience. The excitement in the bus afterwards was the best experience ever! (The girls) learned how to listen to their bodies and how their minds work with their bodies, as well as how to work as a unit without (verbal) communication. It was such a valuable experience and they took the information back to share with their classmates at school.”
