GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - At number 3 Asher Road in Asherville, you will meet Laughton Hoffman - entrepreneur-cum-developer-cum-sportsman and trainer par excellence.
Hoffman is the chief director of the Alpha and Omega movement, where he works as development planner of this change-making company.
Be sure to make an appointment, because this young man is on the go, and is working purposefully and efficiently to change his community.
“We were successful in our attempt to stop the name change of Graaff-Reinet, because we believe in our town and our town’s real values and heritage,” says Hoffman after Alpha and Omega was seen bearing huge placards on the first day of the school holidays.
“We influence the youths in our community positively, by showing them how to succeed,” he says. "'How is it done?’ you might ask.
But let me tell you, we can change the world, our community, and our youths through sport.”
Alpha and Omega Movement is a registered non-profit social development company, and we work together with the Asherville community in Graaff- Reinet. We get funding from a Christian NPO in our town, and we wish to tell them that all of us, and our whole community, are so grateful for their involvement.
“We are also extremely proud to have a good relationship with Montego Cares, because this is where we deliver loads of plastic bottles for credit.
We receive the credit as a coupon with which we can order clothing and sports equipment locally or even online.
Montego Cares cares enough to even provide us with meals for up to 300 people on sports days, like the one we had on 16 June, and the one for disabled athletes and sportsmen and -women coming up on 9 August.”
Earlier during the school holidays, Alpha and Omega presented daily programmes to children and on Wednesdays they kept them occupied for the whole day. Youths, ranging from 6-21 years old, were treated to cadet training and military marching techniques, while "What’s your next move" gave the trainees a chance to play chess and follow the impact of their moves.
Teams usually are made up as U9s, U13s, U15s and then the open age group ranging from 16-21 years. Art, music and woodwork training was also offered.
A full day of golf training, in psychedelic neon clothing, taught these youngsters that turning your dreams into reality requires strategic planning and timely action.
“Golf can indeed teach valuable lessons, such as precision, patience, and calculated risk-taking. The idea of 'taking the shot at the right time' is particularly relevant in both golf and pursuing one's dreams.
How do you plan to take your shot and make your dreams a reality?” says Hoffman.
He is amazed to see the impact of sports education on the individual children, especially when it comes to developing leadership skills and decision-making abilities.
“By combining sports with life skills, we're empowering our country’s youths to succeed both on and off the field. What specific skills or values do you focus on when teaching and how do you measure the results?” he asks.
“We should all be engaged in teaching skills, developing youths and change the way they’re thinking.”
The Asherville community can be immensely proud of the changes that Laughton Hoffman and Alpha and Omega Movement NPC bring about in their community.
