GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Union High is mourning the death of Old Unionite, Sean Kroon, after he was shot and killed in an armed robbery at his home in Bloemfontein this past Saturday night.
Sean matriculated from Union last year and was a first year BSc student at the University of the Free State.
He was shot in the chest when he allegedly chased after the robbers before he collapsed in the street and died. Sean was alone at home studying for an exam that he was supposed to write on Monday.
His laptop and books were on his desk and bed in his room. It is alleged that the robbers came in while Sean was making dinner in the kitchen. They grabbed his laptop, wallet and cell phone and ran out of the house.
It is assumed that this was when Sean heard them and gave chase after them. When he got to the door, he was shot twice in the chest, but continued running after them and eventually collapsed in the street.
Paramedics from ER24 and the local emergency medical services arrived on the scene shortly afterwards where they found Sean's lifeless body in the street, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.
“Sadly, there was nothing that paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident will be investigated [by police],” Vermaak said.
Sean shared the house with three other students but was alone at home at the time of the incident.
Sean started his schooling career at Union Preparatory School in 2005, and for 12 years his laugh could be heard in the corridors of Union. Both his father, Michael and mother, Joanne (nee Bell), were Old Unionites - Michael part of the Class of 1978 and Joanne the Class of 1981. Sean left the family farm in Willowmore this year to go and study in Bloemfontein, with engineering as his main subject.
Messages of condolences are streaming in from friends everywhere. Sean was much loved and popular among his peers. He is described as a free spirit that lived his life to the fullest as if every day was going to be his but had dreams and ambitions as if he was going to live forever. He was a genuine friend and someone that loved people.
The Governing Body, staff and learners of Union High School extend their sincerest condolences to the family.
A private memorial service will be held on Saturday on the family farm in Willowmore.
