GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Union High School has embarked on an exciting, sustainable fund-raising initiative, Trees for Fees, with the aim of assisting deserving learners with their school and boarding house fees.
As part of this project, a greenhouse has been constructed behind Arthur Kingwill House with the kind assistance of the dedicated ground staff.
Borehole water has been sourced to ensure the sustainability of the project, while the planting medium is enriched with soil from the school’s very own compost heaps, as well as manure kindly donated by local farmers.
A beautiful variety of indigenous trees is currently available for purchase, including the wild olive (Olea europaea var. africana), the Camdeboo stinkwood (Celtis africana), the huilboerboon (Schotia brachpetala), the kei apple (Dovyalis afros), and the majestic Outeniqua yellowwood (Afrocarpus falcatus).
In addition, other exciting species are being germinated, such as the Cape chestnut (Calodendrum capense) and the ever-popular jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia).
Fruit and avocado trees will also soon be available, broadening the range for those looking to support this worthy cause while greening their gardens.
All trees are priced at just R150 each, offering great value for an enduring investment in both education and the environment.
For those looking for something a little smaller, vibrant red geranium plants are also on sale at the bargain price of R30 per bush.
By supporting Trees for Fees, you are not only helping the Union Schools provide opportunities for deserving learners, but also contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for our community.
