Public invited to have their say on proposed Sleeping Giant Main Transmission Substation

Associated infrastructure includes:

132 kV/400 kV transformer/s within up to 25ha High Voltage (HV) yard footprint
400 kV/ 765 kV transformer/s within up to 25ha HV yard footprint
Busbars, bus couplers and bus sections
Foundations, steel structures, platforms and equipment
Fibre optic cables for telecommunication
Surge and lightning protection equipment/mast
Permanent and temporary laydown areas, Operation and Management (O&M) and Control Room buildings, security infrastructure, fencing around the development footprint
Internal access roads
Short access road north of the MTS site

As part of the Environmental Authorisation process, a Basic Assessment (BA) is being undertaken in accordance with the National Environmental Management Act (Act 107 of 1998). The proposed development falls within the Eastern Corridor of the Strategic Transmission Corridors.

The Basic Assessment Report will be available for public review from 3 August to 4 September, providing an opportunity for interested and affected parties to review the findings and submit written comments before the closing date of 4 September 2026.

The report can be viewed online and an electronic copy can also be made available via electronic platforms (Smash/WeTransfer/DropBox) upon request.
