GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Mountain Zebra Camdeboo Protected Environment (MZCPE) recently hosted an information evening at the Gentleman's Club in Graaff-Reinet to introduce landowners to the Karoo Lamb Consortium.
Led by Professor Johann Kirsten, the session underscored the importance of protecting the Karoo Lamb brand as one of the few recognised geographical indicators (GI).
Kirsten's presentation highlighted how Karoo Lamb reflects the region's unique natural conditions and cultural heritage, offering a competitive edge in both local and international markets.
He also emphasised its potential to promote sustainable farming practices and uplift local communities.
A defining feature of Karoo Lamb is the Karoo veld, which is marked by its semi-arid climate and rich indigenous vegetation.
Aromatic shrubs such as wild rosemary, karoobossie, and kapokbos contribute significantly to the lamb's distinct, herbaceous flavor.
The Karoo region's unique environment further amplifies the value of Karoo Lamb as a GI product.
The arid landscape, interspersed with resilient indigenous plants, imparts a one-of-a-kind flavor and exceptional quality to the meat, reinforcing its deep connection to the region's natural conditions.
Interest in collaboration
The event, well-attended by landowners, demonstrated a strong interest in collaboration. Attendees enjoyed pre-meeting snacks sponsored by Venters Butchery and Deli and the evening concluded with a traditional Karoo dinner featuring lamb chops and roosterkoek, prepared by Karoo Meats and Deli.
The MZCPE extends its heartfelt thanks to both butcheries for their generous contributions and exceptional food.
They look forward to work with this initiative and see it potential grow. "One way to get involved is to join us this Saturday at Karoo Lamb Champs and come taste true Karoo Lamb prepared on the spit," says Kirsten.
