ABERDEEN NEWS - It was a very successful and satisfying day in court last Thursday for the Aberdeen police, but not so for those who were convicted.
The strictest sentence handed down was one of three years’ imprisonment, with no option of a fine, for contravention of a protection order.
A 29-year-old woman from Lotusville had taken out the order against her ex- boyfriend, and on two occasions within two months, she laid charges against him for contravening the order.
This was taken very seriously by the court, and Wessel Wentzel (26) was found guilty on both cases.
In a second case, 34-year-old Zane de Jager was given a sentence of six months’ imprisonment, suspended for five years, for an incident in December when he contravened a protection order issued to his father.
On 31 October last year, two men stole a gate from the Aberdeen cemetery. They were arrested the same day, in possession of the gate, which is property of the municipality. Luthando Blou (29) and Ricardo May (24) were both found guilty, and sentenced to a fine of R2 000, or three months’ imprisonment, suspended for five years.
Two men were also convicted of stock theft. Samuel Prins (22) and Richard Lambert (24) were sentenced to three years’ and 18 months’ imprisonment respectively, for an incident on 6 December 2017 at Bokpos farm.
They were found guilty of stealing one sheep. The sentence may seem severe, but consideration was taken of the fact that Prins already had a suspended sentence from a previous stock theft offence, and Lambert one for for theft.
