GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Commission for Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Commission) had introduced an extraordinary project to revive the indigenous Khoisan language in Graaff-Reinet.
The first workshop on 9 June was well received and the community members were keen to learn about their history and language.
The chiefs and leaders received a Khoisan language booklet and a WhatsApp group was established to practice the clicks and phrases with the guidance of Lelani Jacobs. Jacobs speaks !Nuu fluently and is responsible for the teaching.
Next year the CRL Commission will be returning to Graaff-Reinet to implement the project in local schools.
The chiefs, in consultation with the community, will identify a primary school and crèche where the implementation of the project will kick off.
"This is a phenomenal opportunity for us as the Khoi, San and Griekwa because we lost our language as a result of colonialism. It means a lot to us to be able to get our language back," said co-ordinator and programme director, Latoya Kock.
"My father, the late Chief Soloman Kock V Royal House, fought for our rights as the First Nation. For me to see it being fulfilled is great. It makes me confident to continue the fight for our youth to be free, knowing exactly who they are - the First Nation."
