GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Water is a precious resource. Every part of life is impacted by a lack of water or poor water quality - from personal health, hygiene and habitats, to food supply, livelihoods and the eradication of poverty and under-development.
On Thursday morning, 14 March, Union High School - proud to do its part in creating awareness of the importance of saving water - held an Eco-wise Day where the learners were encouraged to take cognizance about the importance of saving water, the seriousness of water scarcity and also to encourage them to take care of the environment.
Throughout the day, the different grades spent time engaged in activities centred around water conservation and recycling.
Among the activities was a trip to the Nqweba Dam where ‘water’ and ‘wetlands’ were discussed as well as a walk to Mackie’s Pit where the school’s water comes from.
Posters were made, desks refurbished, stationary was upcycled and water filters assembled.
The learners also filled bottles with fresh rainwater from the school’s water tanks, which were later delivered to the Margery Parks TB Hospital.

As always, a water-themed day is never complete without a special visit from Sponsie.
Accompanied, by SANParks’ People and Conservation staff Rosemary Scheepers and Demitri Williams, his excitable behaviour and dancing is always guaranteed to teach the learners’ new and exciting ways of saving water and about how precious water is.
Sponsie put in an appearance to help teach the children about being water wise.
Leaners busy on a project.
