KAROO NEWS - Inmates, as well as personnel at the Graaff-Reinet and Cradock Correctional Centres, are regularly undergoing Covid-19 screenings.
These two centres are the biggest correctional centres in the district and the awaiting trial inmates in Cradock and Graaff-Reinet mostly appear in surrounding towns' courts.
Johan Gerber, communication coordinator for the Department of Correctional Services in the Kirkwood management area, said on Tuesday (21 April) that all correctional services personnel and inmates at all correctional centres are screened regularly.
All new admissions are also screened when admitted to correctional centres. This includes Graaff-Reinet and Cradock.
Correctional services did not want to elaborate on test results within the region.
Gerber said should any person present Covid-19 symptoms or have been in contact with a person who is Covid-19 positive, such a person will immediately be quarantined and tested. This applies to both inmates and officials.
"The treatment protocols for Covid-19, as prescribed by the Department of Health, is followed in all circumstances. The Department of Correctional Services has a close working relationship with the Department of Health, National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the National Health Laboratory Service," said Gerber.
