GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The streets of Kroonvale echoed with the sound of a brass band last Friday, when Edmond Carelse, retiring principal of Lingcom Primary, was escorted to his home by a marching band.
Carelse spent 38 years at the school, the last nine as principal, after taking up his first post as a Grade 4 educator at the school back in 1981. He has earned the respect of both the community and his colleagues, and has never been afraid to go the extra mile for a child.
"Many of our children come from families with severe socio-economic problems, and have heart-breaking home situations," he said.
He has always stressed the importance of setting high standards and instilling strong moral values in children right from Grade R, as many of the children do not have good role models at home.
"I have never considered myself a leader, but rather a life-long learner," Carelse explained. "A passion for education is not enough on its own; a true educator needs an unlimited supply of patience."
His love for children has been evident to all who have had the privilege of working with him, and he has always been a good listener. Children were drawn to confide in him, and he has helped out many when their parents could not afford uniforms or stationery.
He plans to indulge his passion for reading and local travel during his retirement, and also to rekindle his love of art. Most importantly, he is looking forward to spending time with his wife Zabeth, children and grandchildren.
His daughter Vauldi, who is working for the SABC, shared the following insight: "Edmond Carelse believes that every child should be taught that they have unlimited potential to achieve greatness."
