ABERDEEN NEWS - Once again there is a huge tailback of traffic at the R61 roadblock just outside Aberdeen, with motorists taking advantage of the slight relaxing of lockdown regulations to head home joining the vast number of taxis transporting mourners to funerals.
Every single person entering the Eastern Cape is now being tested for Covid-19, and no longer just screened.
The main bottleneck is occurring in the Department of Health tent, where far more detail is now required from each traveller, including all their recent contacts.
Norma and Nceba Makunqa, together with their sister-in-law Nonhla Gedeni, are on the way to Port St Johns for their mother’s funeral. “Our taxi stopped at the back of the line over 13 hours ago,” said a frustrated Nceba.
According to a senior member of SAPS at the scene, when last measured, the queue stretched back more than 2km, with 216 vehicles at a standstill.
There are a few toilets and a water tank available to the public at the roadblock, and the local municipality has arranged for a water tank to be placed about 1 km back for those waiting in the queue.
