Fed-up resident, Aberdeen:
I perused the letter from the (Dr Beyers Naude Municipality) mayor titled War on Waste of 27 January. My immediate thought was that this is not a war declaration but rather an appeal or even a request to not dump all over as opposed to inside the municipal dump. A War on Waste and illegal dumping would mean taking bylaws seriously and at least fining those who dump with impunity wherever they so wish. Can the mayor explain what is done to prevent illegal dumping in residential areas by those who simply do not adhere to requests?
(As we stated last week, Mayor Willem Safers has told Graaff-Reinet Advertiser that he will only respond to media requests once a municipal spokesperson has been appointed to deal with media queries. Until then all of us can only rely on his mayoral letters. Editor)
