SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - For the past 33 years the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival has seen thousands of visitors flock to this coastal town to enjoy the delicate oyster. This year will be no different as several restaurants in and around the greater Knysna have joined the Festival in offering this delicacy in various forms at the Oyster Hotspots from July 1 to 10.
*Tequila Oysters are the flavour at Tapas & Oysters on Thesen Island. Revellers can enjoy three cocktail coastal oysters with a splash of Olmeca Extra Matured Tequila for a mere R25.
Still on Thesen Island, Sirocco Restaurant offers the sexy Salsa Oysters for R49. Three large cultivated oysters each topped with its speciality salsa made up of Vodka Chutney / Kiwi and Litchi / Mango.
*Overlooking the beautiful Knysna estuary and Heads, Quay 4 Knysna will offer six small coastal oysters with a glass of bubbly at R88 as their Oyster Hotspot special.
*Festival sponsors, Pick n Pay Oyster will be offering six cultivated medium oysters at R60 from their Oyster tent at the Festival Pavilion. The newly opened Pick n Pay in Woodmill Lane will sell medium cultivated oysters at R8 each.
*Freshline Fisheries situated close to the entrance of Thesen Island say that they “don’t do cultivated!” They will be serving their Live Wild, straight from the water - medium, large and XLarge. For the authentic flavour they will serve their oysters on ice with lemon and Tabasco® Sauce – the original and authentic flavour to be savoured.
Freshline fisheries are not licenced and Hotspot participants are invited to bring their own alcohol, no corkage will be charged. Each medium oyster will cost R16,50, large, R18,50 and extra-large R22 each.
*Drydock at the Knysna Quays will offer their Skyy Passion Oysters - three large cultivated oysters served with passion-fruit Skyy Vodka infused ganate for R49.
The beautifully situated Cruise Café promises to serve their freshly shucked “beauty” on a saddle of lemon, coriander and chilli at R18.50 each. Pan fried oyster in bacon and tomato sauté served with chorizo infused bloody Mary at R20 and Rooibos and thyme smoked oyster dressed with soya, sesame oil & spring onion, finished with gingered cream cheese for a mere R22.
*Knysna Quays’ 34° South – the market will be offering eight cocktail coastal oysters – all natural for R34.
*Winners of last year’s Pick n Pay Flavours of Knysna served with Tabasco, Sedgefield, the Slow Town of Knysna’s PiliPili Beach Bar will once again be offering an Oyster Hotspot special during the Festival. Here oyster lovers can purchase six medium oysters and get a complimentary glass of Van Loveren Sauvignon Blanc for R99.
*The five-star Lakeside Lodge & Spa, situated on the banks of the magnificent Swartvlei on the west of Sedgefield, will be offering Oyster Hotspot visitors an oyster experience, a pontoon cruise while enjoying six large cultivated oysters and wine tasting at R250 per person.
On terrafirma, oyster lovers will be offered a choice of either a Hot Oyster Shot -one large cultivated oyster with a shot of vodka, Tabasco® Sauce and ground pink pepper for R40, six large oysters for R100 and / or six oysters and a carafe of wine (choice of Matilda’s Secret Red, White or Rose) for R170.
