GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - On Sunday, 31 March, the Graaff-Reinet Bowling Club "steeled" itself for an invasion of 42 members of the Bowls England tour group.
Proceedings kicked off with a light lunch and then the "war" kicked off with 66 bowlers taking to the greens.
After 9 ends, "arms" were laid down for a sumptuous tea.
Pretty soon the battle continued, until 18 ends had been played.
The weary contestants then gathered in the hall for the usual presentations and imbibed on a pint, or two ...
One visitor was heard to comment that this "battle" was the most pleasant on their tour of South Africa, having been to Natal, the Free State and the Northern Cape.
The controlling body of the club, wishes the visitors 'good bowling and a safe journey' as they made their way to Cape Town.
* On Saturday afternoon, 13 April, the monthly Spandau Spar Handicap Pairs competition will be played on the greens of the Graaff-Reinet Bowling Club, to be followed by a Special General Meeting at 18:00.
* The next competition of note will be the Midlands Open Singles that will take place during the weekend of 27 and 28 April, on the greens of the Cradock Bowling Club.
