GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Interns from the Robert Sobukwe Trust in Graaff-Reinet are preparing to educate the community about their socio economic rights through a series of impending community dialogues.
The group of young interns is joined by a local drama group and have pooled their talents to create this awareness campaign, aimed at the greater community of Graaff-Reinet.
The purpose is to educate and inform people of their socio economic rights through a series of scripted community dialogues - this means that the group will be using drama to convey messages and information to audiences in an interactive, and also most importantly, in an educational manner.
The performances will be open to the community, free of charge and will take place in a variety of locations. There will be performances in town, in Kroonvale, Asherville, Umasizakhe, Aberdeen, Adendorp and also Nieu-Bethesda.
A key factor to these performances is the interaction with the community. The group encourages all interested parties to not only attend but to also actively engage during the performances.
This campaign is funded by the Foundation for Human Rights and will run over the course of one year.
The Robert Sobukwe Trust also hosted and organised a development workshop, acting as somewhat of a prelude leading up to the community dialogues last week. This workshop provided the group with content as well as background information on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Gabby Cheminais, from the Robert Sobukwe Trust described these community dialogues as a fitting platform to discuss socio-economic rights as drama has a long history of being the medium of choice used to discuss such issues in an interactive manner in South Africa.
