GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — After the overwhelmingly positive response to the article last week on the crime statistics in the Graaff-Reinet cluster area, particularly when the article was posted on the Advertiser's Facebook page, Cluster Commander Brigadier Rudolph Adolph was once again eager to share the cluster's successes over the last week.
The following statistics apply to the period from 21 to 29 May, for all stations in the Graaff-Reinet cluster, which comprises Aberdeen, Graaff-Reinet, Jansenville and Willowmore.
One man was arrested for attempted rape, two for sexual assault and robbery, and five for robbery. There were fourteen arrests for assault, of which nine were with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
During this period there were seven arrests for housebreaking and theft, one theft out of a motor vehicle, and four general thefts. There were also two suspects arrested for malicious damage to property.
In the Jansenville area, one person was arrested who had escaped from custody at the Jansenville Correctional Services - he was rearrested within an hour.
In drug-related cases, one suspect was arrested for possession of Mandrax, and three for dagga.
Four people were arrested for trespassing, four for offences against the Animal Protection Act, and five traffic fines were issued.
Thirteen people were arrested for being drunk and disorderly. These suspects are held at the local police station for four hours to sober up, and then released.
Three convictions were secured. One suspect convicted of robbery was sentenced to three years imprisonment, with no option of a fine.
A sentence of six months imprisonment, suspended for five years, was given for theft, and for possession of tik, the suspect was issued with a fine of R1 000 or three months imprisonment, also suspended for five years.
There were several items confiscated or handed in as stolen property. These include such diverse items as meat, dagga, burnt copper pipes, a wheel barrow, sheep carcasses, knives, a motor vehicle, straws containing tik, Mandrax tablets, and clothing. A firearm and ammunition were also confiscated in Graaff-Reinet by the designated firearms officer due to the owner not storing the weapon in the prescribed manner. The police are doing random checks on firearms owners to check for compliance.
Once again, Brigadier Adolph is very grateful to those members of the public who have assisted the police, by acting as their eyes and ears in the community.
