GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Grade 11 learners of Nqweba Secondary School in Graaff-Reinet can now broaden their educational horizons digitally, after being gifted e-learning devices.
"We are over the moon," said principal Zolile Malotana about the Omang ed-tech tablets, developed and donated by Jendamark Automation, based in Port Elizabeth.
Each of the 114 learners received a personalised android tablet, pre-loaded with their textbooks, educational websites, learning apps, and will receive 2GB of free data monthly.
These tablets are programmed for educational use only, and will allow the leaners to study remotely.
Grade 11 learners have the first look at their new tablets, which will enable them to study at home.
Excited learner Khazimla Pikashe said the tablet will enable him to focus on his studies, which has been challenging due to the Covid-19 pandemic and disruption of the academic year.
"It's been difficult because we were at home for months," said Pikashe. "We don't have access to the internet or money for data."
Teachers of Nqweba will now be able to support learners remotely by uploading content, lessons, old exams and notes to the learners' devices. They can also schedule tests, and class discussions via a safe chat forum.
"It means a lot," Pikashe added. "We don't, for example, have Life Science textbooks at school, and it's a difficult subject. Now we can access more information."
According to Malotana, teachers are equally excited, and look forward to assisting their learners digitally.
Local mayor Deon de Vos said this quintile-three school is a worthy beneficiary, and the school has teachers and learners passionate about education. "I am very proud of the performance of this school, notwithstanding the challenges and conditions we are facing," he said.
Last year, the school saw an 87% matric pass rate.
Quinton Uren, group managing director of Jendamark, said the tablets were specifically designed to support under-resourced schools. These devices have been piloted among a thousand learners across the country.
"It gives learners access to a focus, digitally enhanced learning experience," Uren said. "This puts them on the same educational footing as their peers."
Let's get digital! Over 100 learners of Nqweba Secondary School were gifted educational tablets.
