GRAAFF REINET NEWS - In the spirit of Heritage Month, local hairdresser and talented cook Victor 'Vic' Verwey is excited to share a few of his favourite braai recipes.
On this week's menu is:
Mealie bread
- 250 g cake flour
- 1/4 cup cornflour
- 4 shakes baking powder
- 2 shakes salt
- 1 handful sugar
- 9 glugs sunflower oil
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 tins (410 g each) sweetcorn kernels
- 3 eggs
Method
Mix together the dry ingredients, make a well in the centre and poor in the liquid. Blend thoroughly to prevent lumps. Put your dough in a greased loaf tin, inside a cast-iron pot filled halfway with water. Now, steam over the coals for 2 hours.

Serve hot, in slices, with butter.
