GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Last December, the Advertiser published an article about the sterling work done by Child Welfare in Graaff-Reinet in assisting vulnerable children and youths.
The financial situation of the organisation is becoming desperate, with even the most basic needs being a struggle.
In the hope that some concerned residents and caring local businesses may be able to alleviate at least some of these needs, the staff members have drawn up a wish-list of their most pressing needs.
Cleaning materials of all types are needed, ranging from black bags and toilet rolls to washing powder and bleach.
In the stationery line, pens, copy paper, toner for the photocopy machine (CBT-CRG 128/328/728), highlighters, staplers and staples, and calculators are all needed. Even small items such as paper glue, rulers and correction fluid are in short supply.
Most of these are small, relatively cheap, and easily available items, such as the individual items of stationery and cleaning materials. Could one of the supermarkets perhaps set up a trolley for donations?
The organisation has a car, but this badly needs a service, and the tyres are worn and should be replaced. The licence disc expired at the end of November and there is no money to renew this. They are also looking for a log book for their car- maybe one of the many car dealerships in town could sponsor this?
They do not have a landline, and have to rely on a cellphone –lack of airtime (MTN) means that they often can only receive calls and not make them. They cannot afford the installation costs for a Telkom line, but it would make their work much easier, and be far more cost-effective in the long term.
Is there a computer company able to help by servicing their computer, which is infected by viruses? Could an internet service provider perhaps assist with getting them online to be able to communicate by email?
Donations of office furniture, particularly filing cabinets and desks and chairs, that may be sitting around unused, could be put to good use in the Child Welfare offices.
The electricity account is currently in arrears to the amount of R3 500 –this is an urgent need indeed.
Is there anyone with welding skills who is able to help out? The front gate of the office is in need of repair. The offices would also benefit from a fresh coat of paint.
Anyone who is able to help in any way –even if it is to co-ordinate donations and approach possible suppliers, is asked to contact Ms. Nysschens or Ms.Visagie at 0713383694.
