GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Brigadier Rudolph Gerald Adolph arrived in Graaff-Reinet this week to take up the post of Cluster Commander, which became vacant on the recent retirement of Brig Andries Trollip.
Brig Adolph grew up in Graaff-Reinet, and it was always his aim to return to his home town.
He matriculated at Spandau Senior Secondary School in 1989, and joined the police in 1991 in Graaff-Reinet. He attended the Bishop Lavis SAPS Training College in Cape Town, and then spent his first year based at the Aberdeen station.
Eight years in Graaff-Reinet followed this, and in 2000 he left to take up a post as a warrant officer in Cradock at the area commissioner’s office, during which time he was promoted to the rank of Captain.
In 2002 he left the relative peace and quiet of the Eastern Cape for the big cities, spending three years in Gauteng (first East Rand then North Rand) with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
His next move was to Middelburg in Mpumalanga as a full colonel in the provincial commissioner’s office, where he stayed for two years. In 2007 he relocated to Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit), where he was worked until his move back to Graaff-Reinet.
Although he is now based in Graaff-Reinet, he is responsible for eight other police areas: Aberdeen, Jansenville, Pearston, Somerset East, Willowmore, Rietbron, Klipplaat and Baviaanskloof all fall under his area of responsibility, as well as the two satellite stations at Nieu-Bethesda and Waterford.
Although he only started in Graaff-Reinet on Tuesday this week, Brig Adolph is already hard at work.
He is keen to understand the needs and expectations of this particular community in terms of policing, recognising that these differ from area to area.
“Many issues contribute to crime in an area, and we need to identify these, and then neutralise the factors generating crime” he explained. He has already started analysing the situation regarding the overall safety of the community.
He has been married to his wife Charlay for 25 years, and the couple have two daughters, Yintze and Ruche. Charlay is a qualified nurse, but has not yet found work in Graaff-Reinet. Ruche is following in her father’s footsteps, and is a constable in Graaff-Reinet SAPS, and Yintze is studying at the University of Pretoria.
The Adolphs are delighted to be back in their home town with their extended family.
