ROBERT SOBUKWE TOWN NEWS - A well-known security specialist and wildlife protector was tragically killed on Thursday morning after being attacked by a black rhinoceros during an anti-poaching operation at the Samara Karoo Reserve.
According to a joint statement issued by the reserve’s directors, Milk River Security and the family, Schoeman van Jaarsveld (58), director of the private security company, sustained fatal injuries at around 10:30 on Thursday, 23 April.
Van Jaarsveld and his team were conducting anti-poaching activities when the incident occurred. Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, where he was declared dead.
Milk River Security provides specialised anti-poaching, security and rhino protection services to several properties in the region, including Samara Karoo Reserve. Van Jaarsveld and his team have played a vital role in wildlife protection, particularly in safeguarding rhinos.
In the statement, tribute was paid to his dedication and contribution to conservation. “He will be deeply missed,” it read, while extending condolences to his family, colleagues and team.
A full investigation into the incident is currently underway, with the reserve working closely with authorities.
