GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - John Luscombe convincingly won the title Hospice Wine Connoisseur for 2020 at the recent Camdeboo Hospice Blind Wine Tasting fundraiser on 29 February.
The event took place in the Willie Dean Hall at the Graaff-Reinet Club. There was a wonderful atmosphere as the room filled with 90 guests of diverse ages, all eager to taste the wines and show their prowess.
As each wine was presented, with a brief introduction of its qualities, guests were given small tasters, and had to match it with the varieties on their lists.
It proved to be much more difficult than expected and even had the connoisseurs guessing!
In the team event, three tables tied for first place and after answering a number of wine-related questions, there was still no clear winner, so every team member received a bottle of wine.
Everyone gave freely to the raffle for a wine hamper, won by Ine van Ketel. There was also a good response to the auction of the boxes of wines.
The event was made possible by wine donations from Pick n Pay, Tops at Spar, Annamie Kirsten with the Stellenrust range and Our Yard.
A tasty finger supper was prepared by the chefs of Muller House.
The evening brought in a very pleasing sum, exceeding expectations, and Camdeboo Hospice management are grateful to board member Yvonne Drummond, whose tireless efforts and attention to detail ensured the success of the event.
