KAROO NEWS - There has been a great deal of speculation in the community about whether funerals will be able to go ahead once the country is in lockdown, and how many mourners will be permitted. At this stage, there seems to be no clear directive.
According to Brummer's Funeral Directors in Graaff-Reinet, there may be no church service at all, but a graveside ceremony may be held.
Vicky Brummer said he had confirmed this with SAPS Cluster Commander Brigadier Adolph in regard to two funerals this coming weekend, and was told that up to 100 mourners may be present.
Marius du Plessis, Group Communication Manager at Avbob's head office, said that the company had not yet received the latest regulations with regards to funerals.
"The regulations which applied before Monday night's announcement restricted the number of people attending a funeral to 100 people, and the family had to inform the nearest police station of their arrangements," explained du Plessis.
He added that it seems that there will be some national regulatory guidelines, but local municipalities will issue by-laws in this regard.
He expected there to be much stricter regulations applying to funerals from now on.
Efforts to get information from the municipality or SAPS directly were unsuccessful by the time of going to press.
