Update
GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A provincial traffic officer from Port Elizabeth, Frans Schoeman, died around 3pm on Friday 3 April following a car accident.
Schoeman, with 29 years service as a provincial traffic officer, was on his way back from Aberdeen to his base at Straundale, Port Elizabeth, when the accident occurred.
He was part of a team of police, traffic and emergency service officers who conducted a roadblock to make sure motorists adhere to the Covid-19 lockdown regulations.
It is alleged that Schoeman lost control of the vehicle after it hit a kudu on the R63, approximately 20km from Jansenville. The vehicle overturned and landed on its roof.
Emergency services from Graaff-Reinet, Jansenville and Aberdeen responded to the scene.
Police spokesperson Captain Bradley Rawlinson confirmed that Schoeman was declared dead by emergency services upon their arrival at the scene. He was alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Neither Khuselwa Rantjie, director of communications at the Eastern Cape Departement of Transport, or Ncedo Kumbaca, senior manager of communications at the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, could be reached for comment.
Schoeman would have retired at the end of this year. In an earlier statement, Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe, said Schoeman was assigned to help at the Aberdeen roadblock because of his dedication and his expertise.
