GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Detectives cannot confirm any link between two hijackings of delivery vehicles that took place on Friday evening 21 December last year. Both vehicles were en-route from respectively Somerset-East and Pearston, towards Graaff-Reinet.
The drivers did deliveries in the two towns, before driving towards Graaff-Reinet.
Captain Bradley Rawlinson, a police spokesperson, said the first hijacking took place at about 5.45pm. "It is alleged that a truck was pulled off the road between Somerset-East and Pearston by an unknown vehicle. The driver was approached by two males at gunpoint, who demanded money,” Rawlinson said.
He said groceries and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen. The robbers then fled the scene.
The second hijacking ended up in a fatal accident. Shortly after the first robbery, a bakkie delivering stock in Somerset-East was hijacked. As the hijacker drove off, he lost control over the vehicle, it overturned and he died on the scene.
