GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - According to a statement made by Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality (DBNLM) Mayor Deon de Vos this evening (11 June), Graaff-Reinet has recorded a second Covid-19-related death.
“I convey my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” De Vos said. He also thanked the district’s health workers for their efforts in fighting the pandemic.
De Vos added that DBNLM has 46 Covid-19 cases (which includes 13 health officials), of which 28 individuals have recovered.
The mayor noted his concern about the increasing tensions in certain DBNLM towns, likely referring to the recent protests in Jansenville about the presence of a Covid-19 patient from Graaff-Reinet in the SAWAS hospital.
“These actions are leading to stigmatisation of infected individuals, and cannot be condoned,” he said.
“No community may prevent any individual from receiving health care.” De Vos called on communities to be “law abiding citizens, to respect life, remain calm, and respect the dignity and human rights of all patients.”
