Update
GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Despite numerous requests for information, the SAPS spokesperson of the Sarah Baartman District, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, has still not responded to the Graaff-Reinet Advertiser's questions relating to the alleged assault of the 15-year old boy who was airlifted to the Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha last week.
On Friday 27 January, Major-General Zolani Xawuka, District Commissioner of SAPS, instructed the Graaff-Reinet police to investigate the matter but it remains uncertain whether they managed to gather enough evidence to register the case as, according to Graaff-Reinet Station Commander, Colonel André Arends, he is not allowed to communicate with the media.
The identity of the alleged perpetrator is known to the Graaff-Reinet Advertiser, but he cannot be identified as it will also identify the victim, a minor.
The alleged reason and circumstances surrounding the assault have also been conveyed to us via a third party, but we have decided to withhold the information until we have official confirmation from SAPS.
A member of the Community Police Forum in Graaff-Reinet undertook to assist the Graaff-Reinet Advertiser in obtaining the required statement. Readers will be updated as soon as the official statement is received.
