KAROO NEWS - News of a grant of R951 000 from the National Lotteries Commission has eased many of the financial worries of Camdeboo Hospice, and a new vehicle for the professional nurse to use when visiting the outlying areas will be a real blessing.
Two days before the Hospice office closed for its annual shut-down at the end of last year, staff received a telephone call from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) with the wonderful news that the organisation's grant application had been approved.
During the last week of January notification was received from the bank to say that an amount of R951 000 for the 2019/2020 period had been deposited into the Hospice account, and there was much celebration and gratitude in the office.
This grant will contribute towards the general running costs for the following 12 months, including staff salaries, bank and audit fees, rent, telephone, water and lights and stationery.
With this substantial contribution towards these basics taken care of, Hospice can concentrate on its main function, and continue to provide home-based palliative care to those living with life-limiting illnesses in Graaff-Reinet, Aberdeen, Jansenville and Klipplaat.
Most exciting is that R520 000 of this funding has been allocated to invest in a new vehicle for Hospice's professional nurse to use for when she needs to travel to the each of the outlying towns once a month to provide home-based palliative care for the registered patients in these towns. This allocation includes the maintenance and fuel for the vehicle, which will also be used for visiting local patients.
Delivery of the vehicle is expected early next month, and the prospect of its arrival is a cause for great excitement amongst the staff!
Camdeboo Hospice is very grateful to the NLC for this financial partnership, as the NLC is one of the very few remaining organisations which helps NPOs by contributing towards the costs of actually providing a community service. It is becoming more challenging than ever to convince funders that, without office space, electricity, stationery, a bank account, and of course staff, it would be impossible to provide any type of service. All these things cost money and non-profit organisations struggle to cover the ever-increasing expenses.
Camdeboo Hospice is extremely appreciative of this support from the National Lottery Commission.
