Update
GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Not every fire department can come up with the funding to build a new fire station when needed. But if there is a need, one can always come up with a plan – in this case re-purposing the existing building.
To this end the Fire Chief of Beyers Naudé Local Municipality, Berandien Benito, and his firefighters have started to renovate a building at the traffic department in Somerset Street in Graaff-Reinet.
Benito said using this building will assist in improving service delivery, offering training, testing equipment and provide effective emergency response services during emergency situations.
The community will in future know where to contact the fire department in the case of an emergency.
Benito told Graaff-Reinet Advertiser that the building needs major attention as there is no water and the electric wiring is not ideal.
"We managed to get paint and other tools from sponsors, but more is needed to get this building to an operating standard," he said.
He stressed that good, effective service delivery is very important to the Graaff-Reinet Fire Department and this addition to their buildings will go a long way in achieving that.
The date for the official opening of the building is yet to be determined.
