ABERDEEN NEWS - Nine decades ago, Elizabeth Frazenburg was born on the farm, Palmietfontein, in the Aberdeen district, on 13 May 1929.
After a spell as a domestic worker in Cape Town, Elizabeth returned to Aberdeen, where she helped her brother in his takeaway shops until she was 50-years-old.
During the recent Easter holiday weekend, her family and friends from near and far came together to celebrate 90 years of her wonderfully strong, God-filled life.
The scripture "Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you", (Exodus 20:12) was at the core of the family celebration.
"Family legends don’t always get to be celebrated and honoured while they can hear the words from those who truly care for and love them," explained her daughter. “So instead of waiting until there was no more time to do that, this year we wanted to celebrate our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, known - even to her daughters - as Aunt Liz."
This name was born from her mother, Ouma Annie Nosisi, who insisted that there was only one mother in her house while she was alive. Ouma raised Elizabeth’s daughters, Nora Nomonde Maseko and Glymene Peggy De Beer, to call her Aunt Liz while they lived and grew up in Ouma Annie’s house. This is how they still address her today.
During the planning stages of the birthday celebration, Elizabeth’s daughters were mindful of the blessing that some of Ouma’s siblings were still living with her and this should also be celebrated, namely John Frazenburg, Jumaima Frazenburg and Jane Frazenburg.
Sadly on 19 March, John Frazenburg passed away at the age of 93, and this served as a reminder to the family of the importance of celebrating life and appreciating elder family members while they still could.
After careful organisation, the family celebrated and honoured Ouma Elizabeth (Aunt Liz) Frazenburg together on 20 April for a life lived with strong character, earnest love, resilience and respect.
Elizabeth Frazenburg is a strong lady. She exudes strength and power, while her wisdom and a sharp honest tongue are among the many reasons that she is adored by her extended family. She is a mother of two daughters, a grandmother of six (four grandsons and two granddaughters) and a great-grandmother of four (two great grandsons and two great granddaughters).
