GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Nine eager artists gathered at Imibala Gallery in Graaff-Reinet on Saturday 1 February, for a two-day intensive painting course titled Introduction to Painting a Head, taught by Jonathan Silverman.
“We started with basic bone structure of the skull, drew it and then painted in black and white oil paints,” said participant Janet Kingwill.
Also on the programme for the artists was working from a cast bust of a head, and learning to reproduce a famous artists’ portrait in their own way, with a limited pallet.
“We were skilfully guided by Jonathan's vast experience in teaching,” Kingwill said. “The best (and most challenging) exercise was kept for last, a six-hour session with a live model, drawing and painting the lovely fresh-faced Katherine Imrie.”

Each artist left with four paintings, inspired to tackle portraits.
The organisers of the course thanked Silverman, Imibala for hosting the workshop, and all the attendees.
