GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Rudy Jacobs, councillor for Ward 7, chaired a community meeting in Adendorp last week.
The meeting was well-attended by residents, but unfortunately not by municipal officials.
As he had for the previous two meetings, Cllr Jacobs invited the municipal manager and COO to attend, as the residents were getting frustrated at the lack of response to their concerns. However neither official had even acknowledged the invitation, and when Cllr Jacobs went to the municipal manager’s office on the day of the meeting to find out if he would be attending, he was told by the MM’s secretary that both men were in another meeting and were unavailable.
There are many service delivery issues that have been of great concern to the local residents for many months, including the situation at the Waste Transfer Station, illegal dumping in the area, and the lack of law enforcement.
Cllr Jacobs, and the Adendorp community, are now feeling as though their issues are not seen as important by senior officials.
“If the MM and COO were not able to come, they could at least have sent a representative” said a clearly frustrated Cllr Jacobs. “The community feel that they are being disrespected and ignored”.
The Adendorp community members are now determined to take action, to get their concerns heard by officials who seem unwilling to face the issues that affect the residents.
Cllr Jacobs did not want to reveal the form that this action would take, for fear of jeopardising the success of the protest if advance knowledge was given to the municipality, but he and the community members are determined that their voices will be heard.
