GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — A group of 11 Union High swimmers participated in the Top 8 Invitational Gala on Saturday, March 18, which pits the top swimmers of schools in the province against each other.
The Union swimmers who were invited to take part were: Hannah Bodenstein, Kendall Krige, Jade Shires, Kelly Chester, Mack Rubidge, Ben Kroon, Candice Russel, Jenna Harvey, Paige de la Harpe, Gerrit Brink and Johan Vorster.
Congratulations to the following swimmers on their medal win:
• Jade Shires (Girls U.14): Gold for 50m Backstroke and Bronze for 50m Freestyle
• Kelly Chester (Girls U.14): Silver for 50m Breaststroke and Silver for 50m Freestyle
• Mack Rubidge (Boys U.15/16): Bronze for 50m Freestyle
• Ben Kroon (Boys U.15/16): Silver for 50m Backstroke
• Candice Russel (Girls U.15/16): Gold for 50m Breaststroke
• Paige de la Harpe (Open): Gold for 50m Breaststroke, Backstroke and Freestyle.
• Gerrit Brink (Open): Gold for 50m Breaststroke, with Bronze for both 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle.
• Johan Vorster (Open): Gold for both 50m Backstroke and Freestyle, and Silver for both 50m Breaststroke and Butterfly.
Union High won 17 medals in total and therefore the “Best Performance” Trophy of the whole event, as well as Johan Vorster winning the Victor Ludorum trophy.
Union gave a brilliant performance and the swimmers were well rewarded for all their hard work during the season.
