GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Union High School's first boys’ and girls’ senior tennis teams participated in the Marco Wasserman tournament in Middelburg over the weekend.
The tournament was very closely contested. Playing only doubles and mixed doubles, every game won and lost in every match was tallied, and at the end of the tournament, the team which had won the most games over all, was the winning school.
Union boys and girls drew 26 games all with De Aar High school and 28 games all with Middelburg. They won convincingly in the remaining three matches and managed to beat their closest rivals on total games won. After having won the tournament two years ago and coming second last year, they were thrilled to bring the trophy home once again.Marco Wasserman was tragically killed in a motor bike accident 10 years ago. He wasn’t a great tennis player, but loved the sport and more particularly, playing doubles and mixed doubles where he enjoyed the social aspect of having a partner.
He was admired for his “no blame” attitude on a court, never making his partner feel bad about making a mistake. In his honour, a special award is always made at the tournament to acknowledge a player there with this special quality of sportsmanship. Union is very proud to say that Micela Loock was the recipient of this award.
The Union team was also awarded the “blessing box” - a box filled with produce for someone needy. The team will decide who they would like to bless with this wonderful gift, in the Graaff-Reinet community.
