GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — After a series of trials, an U.15 rugby team was selected from the schools in the central Karoo area.
While usually rivals at school derby days, the boys came together to form a talented team who played at the Eastern Province sub-union rugby tournament in Aliwal North this past weekend.
The team was managed by Christopher Felix of Union High and coached by Micheal Hector of Asherville and Henry Green of Middeland Secondary School.
The team who played are as follows: Bowen Langmead, Junior Dube, Renaldo Welman, Khwezi Simon (VC), Brett Amsterdam, Mack Rubidge, William Kayster and River Carey from Union High; Calvin Bartman from Spandau; Renier Swanepoel, Christopher Iakay, Nicolas Grobler, Calvin Swarts, Dieter Bertram (Captain), Chad Saptoe, Gershaw Prins and Ruben van der Merwe from Hoër Volkskool; Christiaan Vorster and Pieter Erasmus from Hoërskool Middelburg; Sithemba Blauw from Middeland Secondary School; Winston Krismis from Asherville and Roze Damans form CDT.
According to the team's manager, Christopher Felix, the boys performed exceptionally well, beating the Joe Gqabi Invitational team 36-7 and only narrowly losing to a very strong PE Central team 24-19 in the last minutes of the game.
Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg can be very proud of these young players.
