GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The interschools between the Union Schools and Volkskool officially kicked off on Tuesday, and Union High School had all the right moves on the chessboard.
Under the leadership of 1st team captain Liano Naidoo, the Union matric team was crowned the victors of their section, beating Volkskool 13 - 11.
"The beauty of chess is that it can be whatever you want it to be," Naidoo quoted Simon Williams on why he loves the sport. "It transcends language, age, race, religion, politics, gender and socio-economic background. Whatever your circumstances, anyone can enjoy a good fight to the death over a chessboard."
Union High School's Top 12 also performed well, winning their section 22 - 2.
Volkskool's primary department had counter moves and won their section 13 - 17.
Union thanked those who attended the evening in support of the players, as well as Christopher-John Koopman, who assisted in preparing Union High's chess players for the encounter.
