GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Midland Fours competition for men and women was played on the greens of Middelburg Bowling Club last weekend, 20 and 21 January.
It proved to be happy hunting for the 52 bowlers bowlers from Graaff-Reinet who took part with seven men's teams and six ladies sides.
After the round-robin games, the section winners were as follows:
Men: Ulrich Steynberg, Niel Colyn, Hansie Jordaan and Stefan Ittershagen-Strauss (Graaff-Reinet) and Wally Koetaan, Fanie van der Merwe, Ferdie Serfontein and Martin Verwey (Graaff-Reinet).
Women: Charlene Colyn, Riana du Toit, Priscilla West and Helene de Wet (Graaff-Reinet) and Alida Zwiegers and her teammates from Middleburg.
The final between the two Graaff-Reinet men sides saw Steynberg and his team take a 14 - 6 lead after 14 ends, but nine shots conceded over the next seven ends by the Steynberg quartet saw Koetaan and his players claim gold by 15 shots to 14.
On the women side, 10 ends were played with a score of 10 - 6 in favour of Charlene Colyn and her teammates, but when Zwiegers and her players conceded a 7 on the 11th end, the writing was on the wall and the Graaff-Reinet women claimed gold.
