GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Last weekend 30 teams competed in the Midland Pairs competition for men and women on the greens of the Graaff-Reinet Bowling Club.
Saturday's play comprised three 18-end games, played on a round-robin basis in four sections. All the bowlers played three bowls, instead of the usual four, due to time constraints.
Men section winners:
- Ivor Wakeford and Niel Colyn (Graaff-Reinet);
- Hilton Cross and Cedric Taylor (Somerset East);
- Wally Koetaan and Ferdie Serfontein (Graaff-Reinet) and Marius de Wit and Jacques Gerber (Cradock).
Women section winners:
- Charlene Colyn and Sonja Matthee (Graaff-Reinet);
- Helene de Wet and Priscilla West (Graaff-Reinet);
- Louisa van Staden and Anneri du Randt (Somerset East) and Marenda Lückhoff and Pam Neuweiler (Graaff-Reinet).
Semi-finals:
In the semi-finals, the Wakeford combination recorded a 18 - 11 victory over the Cross duo, while Koetaan and his partner won their semi-final game against De Wit and Gerber 22 - 12.
The Colyn and Matthee combination in the Women's semi-final beat van Staden and Du Randt 24 - 17, while the De Wet duo had the better of the Lückhoff and Neuweiler couple by 26 shots to 12.
Finals:
This meant that the final was an all Graaff-Reinet affair.
The title in the Men's competition went to Wally Koetaan and Ferdie Serfontein when they beat the Wakeford and Colyn combination by 22 - 12.
Helene de Wet and Priscilla West recorded a fine 24 - 6 victory over the Colyn and Matthee couple and the two winning sides will compete in the EP Pairs Finals on 31 August/1 September at a venue still to be announced in Gqeberha.
