SPORT NEWS - As the morning mist cleared, there was an eerie silence hanging over the plains of the Graaff-Reinet Bowling Club.
Initially, a raid was suspected from the British, but then the attack emanated from the South - a clan of Personal Trust bowlers, mainly from George, with able assistance from their allies in Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and St Francis mobbed the greens at 14:45 in their hordes - all 18 of them.
Fortunately, green keeper Bentley could raise the alarm and the locals came up in numbers to defend their well-kept grounds.
At precisely 15:00 battle commenced on six fronts (rinks) and continued for 15 sorties (ends). Thrust and parry, attack and counter-attack followed and when the sun settled in the west, no advantage could be determined.
A truce was called and the two warring parties joined forces and tucked into meat, salads and the available fare on hand to quench their thirst.
It was agreed that a great time was had by all and a return attack could be eminent.
A Georgian invader looking ever so pleased with matters on the battlefield.
