GRAAFF-REINET BOWLING NEWS - Thirty bowling teams battled it out on the greens of the Graaff-Reinet Bowling Club on Saturday 31 October, where the Personal Trust Open Day was held.
Four games were played on the sunny day, of which the first was over eight ends. The remaining three games were played over 15 ends each.
"The biggest aim of the day, apart from winning, was to avoid being relegated to play on the so-called 'sandpit'", said Pam Neuweiler of the club, referring to the middle green, worst affected by the drought. "Competition was tough, but all played in great spirit," Neuweiler added.
Winners of the event were Herman Hugo from Victoria West Bowling Club and Johan van Onselen, from Middelburg Bowling Club. Runners-up were Sonja and Deon Matthee, with Charles Hayward and Carl Vermeulen in third place.
Graaff-Reinet bowlers Niel Colyn and Ivor Wakeford were fourth, and impressed with a perfect eight-score during one of their games — a score seldomly achieved during competitions.

The Personal Trust Open Day was so much fun that a few bowling enthusiasts extended their bowling weekend to Sunday when they played in a Singles competition. Here, Charlene Colyn from Graaff-Reinet and Sandy Smart from Port Elizabeth were both winners, as the results were tied.
Next on the bowls calendar is the highly-anticipated Business League, which kicks off on Thursday 5 November. The Spar Pairs competition will take place on Saturday 7 November.
