GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - On the morning of Sunday, 10 March, in strong wind, Graaff-Reinet local Dan Davis - aged 81 - was among 35 000 other cyclists who participated in the 42nd annual Cape Town Cycle Tour.
Formerly known as the Cape Argus Cycle Tour, the race is an internationally-renowned bike race, covering a grueling 109km route through Cape Town.
The race begins in the City Bowl and travels along the M3 through Lakeside and then continues through Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and Fish Hoek along the Main Road. The race then travels along the coast to Simonstown and continues through Scarborough and Ocean View. Participants then take the route leading back along the coastline and uphill on Chapmans Peak and to take on the notorious Suikerbossie Hill.
Finally, the downhill stretch leads cyclists to the finish line at Green Point stadium. For Davis, this event - his 16th Cape Town Cycle Tour - was a very special one, as he completed it along with his son and grandson.
That means three generations of the David family was represented at this event this year! His son, Kemt Davis, travelled all the way from Zimbabwe and his grandson, Louis Davis, from England.
Graaff-Reinet locals Paul Broeksma, Andrew and Caryn Cherrington and Gerry Pienaar successfully completed the iconic Cape Town Cycle Tour held on Sunday, 10 March.
