GRAAFF-REINET NEWS— The Shotokounthigh Karate Dojo in Graaff-Reinet had a very momentous start to the year.
The dojo was established in Umasizakhe, Graaff-Reinet in 1992, and currently, boasts 29 students who receive instruction from sensei Mpumelelo Ntabeni.
Students receive periodic grading to measure their progress through the various levels of ability and understanding of karate-do. The rewards of these gradings are many and are symbolised by the presentation of a coloured belt.
At a recent grading held in Uitenhage, Nelisa Mkonko a Umasizakhe resident connected to the dojo, received her black belt after a gruelling examination session.
Mkonko, the dojo's first female student to have achieved this, trained extensively under the mentorship and guidance of sensei Mpumelelo Ntabeni.
Sensei Ntabeni recommends karate for children as he believes it teaches discipline and concentration. “It is a lot of passion, hard work, long hours and dedication.”
