NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS — The Three Provinces Mountain Bike Tour continues to provide cycling enthusiasts with a wonderful two-day scenic tour of the back roads of the Karoo.
Starting off at ‘Grand View’ farm in the Murraysburg district in the Western Cape, cyclists then head east, crossing the border into the Northern Cape, past ‘Groenvlei’ farm and end off day 1’s challenge of 89km in Nieu-Bethesda in the Eastern Cape.
After a festive braai in the village and a good night’s sleep on Saturday evening, the more energetic of the group headed off towards ‘Gordonville’ – a steep climb of about 30km.
The rest of the party met them here and continued on the 60km route circumnavigating the Compassberg. Beautiful views, long downhills, exquisite spring skies, game viewing and the privilege of riding in a place where only two vehicles were seen the entire day, make for wonderful mountain biking.
The Three Provinces tour, now in its 3rd year, was initiated by Geoff Kingwill, Dawie Putter and Johan Bouwer.
The first tour included a Friday ride from Graaff-Reinet in sleet and snow! The route has changed slightly each year, and given the scenic beauty and ease of organisation with Nieu-Bethesda as a hub, makes for a wonderful few days out!
