GRAAFF-REINET GOLF NEWS - The prestigious Proudfoot Golf Tournament annually attracts players from all over the country to compete on the greens of the Graaff-Reinet Golf Club.
This year, the club's committee is putting together a programme to make the weekend's golfing activities more accessible to everyone.
The Proudfoot Golf Tournament - the proceeds of which enables the Graaff-Reinet Golf Club to maintain its position as one of the top 9-hole courses - has been an annual event since 1997.
The event was started to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the late Douglas Proudfoot who had resided in Graaff-Reinet and, with no formal training, had won the SA Amateur title eight times in less than a decade.
This year's tournament will be held on 21, 22 and 23 March with prize money to the value of 20 000.
Most visitors who play in this tournament are bowled over by the excellent state of the course, the friendliness of the Graaff-Reinet people and the delicious and generous meals served.
"To be able to host a tournament of this nature, the Graaff-Reinet Golf Club are indebted to our sponsors," says Yvonne Drummond, a spokesperson for the club. "The Graaff-Reinet Spars, N1 Construction and Mica are again the main sponsors with Riverside Engen, Tavcor and The Golfer's Club coming in as other sponsors. We are sincerely grateful to them all."
The club's committee would like to encourage players to support this tournament. All meals and entertainment are included in the entry fee. This year, musicians Jaco and Dihandre from Gordon's Bay and Dirk from Port Elizabeth will get the evening parties swinging.
"Spectators are very welcome to come out to enjoy the magnificent views of the mountains overlooking the lush green fairways and join in the camaraderie and evening functions," invited Drummond.
