GRAAFF-REINET GOLF NEWS - Graaff-Reinet has no shortage of young golf talent - something the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) has identified and hopes to help develop.
Founded in 1999 by Johann Rupert, the SAGDB's goal is to create grassroots programmes across South Africa, to build the country's golf skills.
The non-profit organisation operates in 14 regions across the country and is supported by Remgro, Alfred Dunhill Links Foundation, the Sunshine Tour, the Professional Golfers Association of South Africa and Gold RSA.
"Where there is a golf course there is the opportunity for children to learn about the sport, and we want to help them seize this opportunity," said Stephan van der Watt, SAGDB training and coaching facilitator.
Together with Frans de Kok, manager of SAGDB for the Eastern Cape, Van der Watt paid a visit to the Graaff-Reinet Golf Club on Friday 4 December, to train club captain Johnny Ludick. Ludick is currently coaching about 10 local youngsters, who were identified for their golfing talent by their irrespective schools.
"The children are very excited to learn, and it's great to see what positive affect golf has had on their lives," said Ludick. "Such a programme is important because it keeps children off the streets and teaches them valuable life lessons and discipline."

"There's no telling where these children could end up, they could become golfing professionals," said Van der Watt, adding that the life skills learnt on the golf course are invaluable. According to De Kok, golf opens doors, especially to historically disadvantaged children.
"Many young players now have the opportunity to develop their skills."
Van der Watt said that he is excited about the project, as Ludick is passionate about the project. "We can see that he is ready to do good work with these children, and his excitement is contagious. It is also wonderful to see how the children enjoy the sport."
President of the Graaff-Reinet Golf Club, Bernie Weyer, expressed his gratitude to the SAGDB for their financial commitment in extending development training to the local club, which includes the funding for a practice tee.
For this project to be a continuous success, the SAGDB and the club call on locals to support the initiative. Any donations or old golfing equipment is welcome, and community members can contact the golf club if they are interested in sponsoring a child.
