GOLF NEWS - The popular Golf-bokkedag was held on Saturday 26 August and attracted 29 golfers to the course. Chilly and windy weather did not deter players, and according to Derek Helm, committee member of Graaff-Reinet Golf Club, this required players to adopt a more strategic type of play.
The course provided superb conditions for a perfect play with its lush and green fairways.
Players and members attended the annual general meeting (AGM) after the day's play. Club president, Eddie Nel, reported on the outstanding achievements of junior golfers:
- Johndre Ludick is a member of the South African junior u.17 squad and he will be playing in Italy and Egypt soon, representing his country and the local golf club,
- Jean Louis du Plessis is plying his trade and competes on the college golf circuit of Shorter University in America.
During the meeting, Nel said that the reduced amount of golf rounds being played causes for concern and that members should invite people to join the golf fraternity.
The new development programme, aimed at the coaching of scholars twice a week in the afternoons, has proved to be most successful and this initiative will continue with club members providing the manpower.
Trophies for various competitions held during the year were also presented at the AGM. The ladies champion is Bets Henning, the senior champion is Eddie Nel, and the club champion is Patrick Ludick. The Weideman trophy for consistent medal golf played over the year was awarded to Vlam Pretorius.
