GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Asherville Secondary School Soccer Team played against Future Stars Football Club at the Graaff-Reinet Primary School Sports Field last weekend.
It once again was great entertainment for the residents of Asherville.
The Future Stars is a well-organised club and most players are fathers and sons. Sicelo Shabalala, the coach, said although it was difficult for the team to find composure and formation in the first half of the game, they played much better in the second half. He said he wants to bring soccer to the schools.
"Asherville Secondary School is a rugby school and I am trying to introduce soccer so that those who have no opportunity to play rugby can play soccer as well," he said.
Asherville Secondary School is preparing for their inter-schools with Spandau in the coming weeks. This weekend they play against different schools, one of them is Nqweba Secondary at Masizakhe.
Shabalala says he knows that at uMasizakhe, football is more advanced than at Asherville, but he wants to build his team to a higher level.
"To me, that was a big sign of commitment and wants them to build their confidence in playing bigger teams. You need that level of determination from time to time and it is beautiful to see."
The game ended up in a draw: Future Stars FC 2-2 Asherville Secondary School.
