SOCCER NEWS - The quarterfinal line-up for the Nedbank Cup was confirmed on Sunday afternoon when PSL sides Bloemfontein Celtic and Kaizer Chiefs claimed hard-fought wins against lower league opponents Mbombela United and Acornbush United respectively.
The Amakhosi were given an almighty scare against Acornbush - the team which beat PSL league leaders Cape Town City in the previous round - at the Kabokweni Stadium, but a late brace from striker Gustavo Paez saw them to a come-from-behind 2-1 win.
Celtic also claimed a 2-1 win, with a double from their Burundian attacker Fiston Abdul-Razak sealing a victory over National First Division side Mbombela at the Dr Molemela Stadium.
The last 16 round got underway in midweek with three matches on Tuesday 4 April. Platinum Stars edged fellow PSL competitors Baroka FC 1-0 after extra time, while SuperSport United proved too strong for lower league side KwaDukuza United as they claimed a comfortable 2-0 away win to continue the defence of their title.
The big upset in midweek saw Bidvest Wits fall on penalties at the hands of Jomo Cosmos. The teams drew 1-1 after extra time, but Ezenkosi took the tie 5-4 on post-match spot kicks to become the first (and only) non-PSL side into the quarterfinals in 2017.
